I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. Genesis 17:7
Our Merciful and Loving Father
Covenant is the basis of our relationship to God because it is God’s promise to us of which He will never break. It is our promise and foundation of the love God has for us, as Hebrews 13:5 says: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” And in Hebrews 6:12-20 NKJV we find the following: “We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. When God made His promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for Him to swear by, He swore by Himself, saying, I will surely bless you and give you many descendants. And so, after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised. People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, He confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
Initial Assurance of Our Faith
The immutability of His promises is a crimson cord of blood running through the seven major covenants with His people Israel and to the Gentile “spiritual Israel.” From the Adamic Covenant to the final Covenant with the Second Adam, Jesus the Godman, whom through the shedding of His Precious Blood sealed the final covenant with the one perfect and final propitiation for sin. Eternity in the Presence of God was assured when Jesus ascended to Heaven and before being seated at right hand of the Father to forever make intercession for us placed His Blood on the Mercy Seat before God the Father.
One New Man and the Millennium
Jeremiah prophesies in Jeremiah 31:31: “Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.” Consider Hebrews 8:6-13 MSG “But Jesus’ priestly work far surpasses what these other priests do, since he’s working from a far better plan. If the first plan—the old covenant—had worked out, a second wouldn’t have been needed. But we know the first was found wanting, because God said, Heads up! The days are coming when I’ll set up a new plan for dealing with Israel and Judah. I’ll throw out the old plan I set up with their ancestors when I led them by the handout of Egypt. They didn’t keep their part of the bargain, so I looked away and let it go. This new plan I’m making with Israel isn’t going to be written on paper, isn’t going to be chiseled in stone; This time I’m writing out the plan in them, carving it on the lining of their hearts. I’ll be their God; they’ll be my people. They won’t go to school to learn about me, or buy a book called God in Five Easy Lessons. They’ll all get to know me firsthand, the little and the big, the small and the great. They’ll get to know me by being kindly forgiven, with the slate of their sins forever wiped clean. By coming up with a new plan, a new covenant between God and his people, God put the old plan on the shelf. And there it stays, gathering dust.” Upon quick read, most would not catch that this scripture is second-coming/millennial prophecy. At such time of fulfillment, we will witness the “one new man” of Ephesians 2:13:18 where Jew and Gentile become one in Jesus Christ. Physical and Spiritual Israel set the stage in God’s plan for the Millennium.
