The Anointing

Today I want to impart to you a basic understanding of the anointing: what it is, why it is extremely important to your life, how to get it, grow it and keep it. I will be using a lot of scripture to reveal this important foundational truth

The anointing is the agent of God that empowers your authority when you receive the free gift of salvation that Jesus gave us through being the once and for all sinless perfect sacrifice and propitiation for our sin that we may live in victory on this earth and in eternity being reconciled to God. Remember that Jesus though fully God shared our humanity through the Incarnation becoming perfect God and perfect man. Scripture tells us in Hebrews 4:15 that He was enough man that He was tempted as we are yet never succumbed to sin. The Godman was on mission of the Father to redeem us. Victory was attained through the cross, where death and the power of hell was defeated, Satan was stripped of his power, eternal life was restored, and the veil that separated us from the Father was torn that we could enter His Presence as the first Adam once did. In 1 Corinthians 15:45 we are told that the fist Adam became a living soul, the second Adam a life-giving spirit.  We attained a new identity in Jesus Christ, the second Adam, the Godman. Jesus arose from the dead and gave us the keys, ascended to Heaven, and placed His precious Blood on the Mercy Seat establishing that the covenant with Adam was replaced by a new and permanent covenant through His Blood. He then sent the promised Holy Spirit to always be with us and empower our lives. He took His place beside the Father to become our 24/7 intercessor and advocate.

The Apostle Paul tells us in Colossians 2:15 that Jesus having spoiled principalities and powers, openly made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Satan is not omniscient and 1 Corinthians 2:8 reminds us of his fatal mistake: “for if the princes of this world had known they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.” Paul says in Ephesians 4:30 that we are sealed for the day of redemption. In other words, Paul is saying you are assured inheritance and the title deed to eternity. So, we have God given authority and the empowerment of Holy Spirit. That empowerment is the precious anointing. Paul says in Philippians 1:21 “for me to live is Christ” so, essentially, he is saying for me to live is the anointed one, because Christ is the Anointed One.

Life in Christ is life in the Anointed One. In the Acts of the Apostles 1:8 it says: “But you shall receive power when Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses of Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The anointing, the indwelling presence of Holy Spirit in your life, will empower you to do all things through Christ. It is our direct connection to the Godhead and ensures that we are able to discern truth. You will not have to face anything that you can’t overcome. You will walk in victory and no weapon formed against you will prosper. It won’t be easy, and we see in Matthew 10:22 that Jesus promised “You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” When you realize what you truly have, nothing on planet earth will ever hold you hostage. Having been at the precipice of death I can, as did, Paul say that to live is Christ and to die is gain. The anointing carries you and connects you in the spirit realm connecting you to the supernatural.

The anointing has always been God’s physical sign or connection to set apart and empower His creation. The term in the Biblical languages is translated as a smearing with oil. In Old Testament times God chose olive oil as a medium or symbolic connection of transference of power, gifting, and consecration for purpose. Kings, Priests, and Prophets were anointed with oil to signify their calling and consecration to that office. This all reveals purpose in Christ in the significance of olive oil production and the painful pre-crucifixion suffering of Christ in the garden of Gethsemane. Gethsemane means a place of great mental or spiritual suffering. The significance of the anointing oil from the olive resides in Jesus’ finished work on the cross. As olives must be crushed in order for the oil to flow out, Christ was crushed at different points in His passion so that we may enjoy wholeness in every area of our lives, and that God’s blessings may freely flow toward us. The prophet Isaiah prophesied, in Isaiah 53:5, of Christ, that “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we were healed.”

As I demonstrated, anointing is the agent of God that enables His Dunamis power to work in and through us for His glory. It is the supernatural presence of God in and upon us when we love Him more than life. The anointing must be pursued daily, or it will be stale, and the measure received depends on the amount of revelation of God’s Word within us. The anointing must be diligently guarded because the flesh kills it. The anointing requires intense relationship with God through time in the Word, worship, meditation, and prayer. The anointing is precious, and God will not allow it to be cheapened in any way. Romans 8:14 lets us know that we are on our way when we are led by the Spirit of God and realize that we are Sons of God with a predestined purpose and promise.

The anointing empowers us to do the work of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In Acts 10:38 we find that God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power after which He went about doing good and healing all oppressed of the Devil. Romans 5:11 tells us that the same power or anointing that raised Christ from the dead resides in us giving life to our mortal bodies. John 14:12 says we will do greater works than He did. How is it possible – all things are possible to Him who believes (Matthew 19:26). Jesus reveals the secret in John 8:29 “And He who sent me is with me. The Father has not left me alone for I always do those things that please Him”.

The anointing comes in two forms; the anointing within that we acquire when born again and the anointing that comes upon when we do the work of the Gospel. In Matthew 3:16-17 we see that the anointing came upon Jesus immediately after His baptism when the Holy Spirit came down and united with Him commissioning Him. Jesus proclaimed in Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free. When He read the scripture from Isaiah, He could have sat down, and everything would have remained normal, but He shook the foundations of Hell when He said, “today this prophesy is fulfilled in your very presence.” Immediately it was “game-on” as Satanically inspired people tried to kill Him there and then and continually thereafter. Hell was unsuccessful because it was not yet His appointed time. Jesus resolutely worked in the anointing at all times and for us to do the things we are called to do so must we ask for and receive the same anointing. We need to place expectation on the anointing. Expectation is extremely important in that we have a level of faith that we can expect what God has promised. We must never forget what faith is and why it is critical and necessary. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen and in Hebrews 11:6 we are told that without faith it is impossible to please God. Your level of faith and intimacy with God will determine the level of anointing entrusted to you. This is especially true in the miraculous and those to whom it is entrusted must never let the pride of flesh to glory. All the Power and Glory must be attributed to God. 1 John 2:20 says we have an anointing from the Holy One (THE ANOINTED ONE) and know all things. This is further confirmed in 1 John 2:27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit–just as it has taught you, remain in him. John is not saying it is ok to be a “lone ranger” within the Body of Christ as each of us is a part that functions to buildup the body, rather he is conveying that God within us is perfection. One would be a fool to attempt going it alone and when one does Satan rejoices as he has isolated you from the protection of the body being one as Jesus asked the Father in John 17 in the most powerful prayer ever rendered.

As I explained, in Old Testament times the anointing was through oil. It was Holy and poured out upon men designated to lead. The oil was a tangible type of the power of God. In Psalm 51 David cried out to God having sinned that God renew a right heart within him and desperately pleaded that God not take the Holy Spirit from him. This clearly shows the importance attached to the anointing. Holy Spirit functioned in the anointing to offices as in David’s case his Kingship. Holy Spirit hovered over Mary at the Incarnation and at our Lords Baptism. But it was not until Jesus completed His mission and ascended to heaven that Holy Spirit came to abide in us and empower us – the Anointing. Isaiah 10:27 says in that day the burden will be taken from their shoulders and the yoke from their necks and be destroyed because of the anointing. Their necks will be so fat with the anointing that a yoke will become impossible. The Holy Spirit is the oil poured out upon us and is mixed with the precious Blood of Jesus. When our faith becomes strong and we appropriate the anointing, the Blood speaks from the throne of God and our enemy is demolished and all his plans thwarted. We are able to live in the supernatural just as God intended for us to do. Although no longer considered necessary, it is my opinion that oil should be used in ministry as a sign of holiness, consecration and a tangible point of contact.

It is God’s design and desire that we live in the anointing and the anointing live in us. We were created in His image and are spirit beings therefore life in that realm is where we belong. When we live in the anointing everything flourishes. The anointing works 24-7 unless you step out of it. When we are connected to the vine we bear fruit of the anointing – His fruit. When the Word is at home in us, we ask anything, and it is ours. The anointing is indispensable to living for God and establishing His kingdom. We must be constantly cultivating the things of God in faith and humility. The enemy will continually and aggressively seek a crack in our armor and seek to destroy as he did in the case of William Branham, a highly anointed man of God in the North American Healing Revival of the late 1940’s and 1950’s, who built on His gift and not the Word. The solution is John 15:4, Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. In Romans 1:16-17, Paul states “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the Gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” 2 Corinthians 4:7 tells us that we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the power be of God and not of us. That is the anointing.

Saint’s, I feel a fresh wind of Holy Spirit blowing across the Nations of the earth. I see it, I feel it, and I hear it. I have experienced a shift and exponential growth in my metron of Africa because that is where God has given me greatest anointing for His purpose in and through me. In 2018, Dr. Lindy and I prophesied The Glory of God sweeping across the Continent of Africa bringing His Light and Glory with restoration of the greatness that God had purposed for the African people. A land which had been referred to for years as the dark continent would longer be.

The Lord is saying to me today: “The thief is caught saith the Lord. My people will rise and expel their enemies and attain the prosperity that I destined them to enjoy. The yoke of slavery, poverty, and disease will be broken. Outside nations will no longer steal or extort from my people. My Ecclesia will decree and experience a fresh wind of my Glory in all of Africa.”

There is a Holy Remnant of God’s people that have finally grasped Kingdom principles and living therein to the extent that Jesus Christ is beginning to establish Ecclesia, His ruling Body on the earth that speaks and decrees the coming millenial rule and reign of our Lord Jesus. Will you be joint inheritor with the Lord Jesus Christ? That is perhaps the greatest question of your life. If you don’t know Him, repent right now of your sin, and invite Jesus Christ to be Lord of your life. My friend, time is of the essence because there is no promise of a tomorrow. Jesus says come unto me, all who are burdened with sin and the cares of the world and the anointing I have for you will break the yoke and give you life now and in eternity. Be blessed in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
